I've been reading a lot lately in the scriptures concerning happiness and joy. I've made some interesting discoveries and thought I'd share what I'm learning. There are 38 scriptures on HAPPINESS and 93 scriptural references to JOY. I get the strong impression that our Heavenly Father wants us to experience some of both feelings and experiences and a lot of both if we make it our quest.
There are my favorite descriptions and references to happiness:
Job 5:17 - Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore, despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty.
Psalms 127:5 - Happy is the man that hath a quiver full of them (referring to children.)
Psalms 144: 15 - Happy is that people, that is in such a case, yea, happy is that people. whose God is the Lord.
Proverbs 3: 13 - Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
Proverbs 14:21 - ...he that hath mercy on the poor, happy is he.
John 13:17 - If he know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.
Romans 14:22 - ...happy is he that condemmeth not himself.
James 5: 11 - Behold, we count them happy which endure...that the Lord is very pitiful and of tender mercy.
I Peter 3: 14 - But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye...
I Peter 4: 14 - If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you...
I Nephi 8:10 - ...I beheld a tree, whose fruit was desirable to make one happy (referring to the word of God.)
2 Nephi 2: 13 - ...if there be no righteousness, there could be no happiness.
Mosiah 2: 14 - And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true, for the Lord God hath spoken them.
Alma 27:18 - Now was not this exceeding joy? Behold, this is joy which none receiveth save it be the truly penitent and humble seeker of happiness.
Alma 40: 12 - ...the spirits of those who are righteous are received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow.
Alma 41: 5 - The one raised to happiness according to his desires of happiness or good according to his desire of good...
Alma 41:10 - ...wickedness never was happiness.
Alma 44: 5 - ...the maintenance of the sacred word of God, to which we owe all our happiness; and by all that is most dear to us.
Alma 50: 22 & 23 - And those who were faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord were delivered at all times...But behold, there never was a happier time among the children of Nephi...
Helaman 12:2 - ...doing all things for the welfare and happiness of his people...
4 Nephi 1:16 - And there were no envyings, nor strifes, nor tumults, nor whoredoms, not lyings, nor murders, nor any manner of lasciviousness; and surely there could not be a happier people among all the people who had been created by the hand of God.
Mormon 7:7 - ...in a state of happiness that hath no end.
Mormon 9"14 - And then cometh the judgement of the Holy One upon them; and then cometh the time that he that is filthy shall be filthy still; and he that is righteous shall be righteous still; he that is happy shall be happy still; and he that is unhappy shall be unhappy still.

Here are some of my thoughts in regard to those scriptures: we should be happy to be corrected and not take offense because correction will help us more closely follow the commandments of God; people are happier when they have children in their lives in one form or another; we will be happier when we have our Heavenly Father as our God and not other things; happiness is something we must seek, we must look for it to find it and those who do are more wise than those who don't; those who help the less fortunate are happier and are blessed personally for their service; those who obey God's commandments are happier than those who do not; good self concept and loving ourselves is an important part of being happy; endurance teaches many things and those who endure challenges well can learn to be happy even through their trials; those who endure criticism and ridicule for defending the truth and their God will be blessed with the tender mercies of the Lord; the word of God (the commandments) make us happy and free from the consequences of sin and disobedience; there must be opposites in all things, we must know misery and suffering to understand and appreciate happiness; we will have spiritual and temporal blessings (including happiness) if we stay faithful throughout our lives and we'll be blessed with endless happiness; one must seek happiness and be humble in the process, it's a process to find happiness, not an automatic gift to all those who are faithful. The rain will fall on all; if we prove faithful to the commandments and teachings of God, we can dwell with him in peace and happiness forever; we'll never be truly happy if we aren't following the Savior Jesus Christ and living his teachings and commandments; if we're doing wrong things against the laws of God, we'll never be truly happy; we have to maintain the word and teachings of God in our lives, we can't become complacent and slothful, or we will lose it; when we serve those around us, we will be happier than if we don't. We must forget ourselves and serve others to experience happiness; when evil is eliminated from our lives, happiness has room to grow; happiness can be our state forever if we choose it.
We can learn how to attain happiness through the scriptures. Happiness is an individual pursuit. Someone else can't give us happiness or make us happy. We must each find and keep happiness in our own lives and if we do, we've been promised that we can keep it for always.
