This talk was given by Marie K. Hafen at the Rick's college devotional in June of 1992 for Women's Week. It should absolutely be required reading for all young girls ages 12-18. I kept the talk in my scriptures and used it weekly when I was a Young Women leader. I think every mom, every sister, every aunt, every cousin, every grandmother and every woman needs to read and discuss the topics contained in the article. I believe our dear girls and young women need our help to teach them and to help them find their way in a society run amok. I'm terribly concerned about many young women I know. How do you think it is best to help?
Here are the salient points from the article:
It has been said that before becoming somebody’s wife, before becoming somebody’s mother, become somebody.
First, become somebody who can support herself.
Second, before becoming somebody’s wife, be careful about who that somebody is.
Third, before becoming somebody’s mother, become somebody capable of being a good mother
Fourth, before becoming somebody’s wife or somebody’s mother, become somebody who can make her own life richer.
Fifth, before becoming somebody’s wife and somebody’s mother, become somebody who is spiritually strong.
Sixth, a message especially for young men: Become somebody who encourages young women to reach their full intellectual and spiritual potential.
Finally, become somebody who understands that being a woman is worth celebrating.
The theme of becoming somebody was used many times by Sister Marjorie Hinckley as well as being taught in the article so well by Sister Hafen. Sister Hinckley's life exemplified those principles. She was an example to us all of someone who became somebody within in own sphere of influence.
