I liked the teenage books primarily because of the themes they addressed, such as this one from the Washington Post by Leonard Sax: Twilight sinks its teeth into feminism.
"The allure of the "Twilight" lies in its combination of modern sensibility and ambiance with traditional ideas about gender. .. more often, modern books communicate a modern view of gender...in the Twilight saga, the girls are still girls and the boys are traditional men. In our enlightened era, some wonder, why would girls respond with rabid enthusiasm to books that communicate such old-fashioned gender stereotypes? Yet on some level, it seems that children may know human nature better than grown-ups do. I have found that despite all the indoctrination they've received to the contrary, most of the hundreds of teenage girls I have interviewed in the United States, Australia and New Zealand nevertheless believe that human nature is gendered to the core. They are hungry for books that reflect that sensibility. Three decades of adults pretending that gender doesn't matter haven't created a generation of feminists who don't need men; they have instead created a horde of girls who adore the traditional male and female roles and relationships in the "Twilight" saga. In other words, ignoring gender differences is contributing to a growing gender divide."
I couldn't have said it better myself. Oh, and she told a pretty good story in the process. Hats off to Stephenie Meyer.

Props to you, Vonnie, for the post, and to Stephanie Myers for writing such traditional and interesting (for women) books. Your blog is great!

I still haven't read those books! How about our bish dated the author and was her first kiss? So funny. Some even think she modeled Edward after him (j/k).
I'm half way through "The Host" and admit that Stephenie has some imagination! Who would have thought girls/women would be interested in reading about ailens, werewolves, and vampires! I do have some problems w/ the books (too wordy mostly) but they're an entertaining way to pass the time- that's for sure!
If you had a dollar for everyone you turned onto Twilight, who turned someone else onto it, etc., you would have A LOT of dollars! Thanks for getting me started! The girls and I are definately hooked.
Interesting article and definitely agreed that women today have a need to see (or read about) women being women and men being men. And I just finished Breaking Dawn tonight. Fabulously entertaining!
