When we were in Washington DC almost two months ago, we got to visit the mall during the night and again during the day. I love to visit Washington! I've only been there three times in my life, but I love the sense of history and the feeling of pride I have in our country when I walk among the monuments and museums. I'm so thankful for our country. For all that it means, for all that it stands for, for all that it represents. Yes, there are problems and many challenges, but overall, I feel very proud to be an American. I value our freedoms and the rights we have to live our lives with security and agency (within the confines of the law.) Since we have been enjoying a week of Thanksgiving, I give thanks for the great land in which we live.
The first night we were there, Rick and I took the subway into the city at night. We walked the length of the mall and then back to the subway station. I think we walked over six miles, but it was so amazing to see our capitol city at night. It's something I've always wanted to do.
I touched the US capitol building, the Washington monument and the Lincoln monument. We stopped and pondered and we called our kids to share the experience. We remembered that Jordan opened her mission call on the steps of the Lincoln memorial (since she was doing an internship in DC that semester) and called us to tell us where she had been called to serve. We just soaked up the moment and it's a memory I will hang on to. We returned the next day to visit the WWII memorial with Rick's dad Vern who served in the Pacific theater.

The monuments area of Washington, D.C. is inspiring anytime, but particularly at night. Those are, in my view, holy places, and keep us remembering those great ones who have gone before us and set an example of how we should be and of what we should believe in. I loved being there with you.
