The walking wounded

(chick to enlarge the pictures)
Yesterday I had a very sobering experience. I attended an event called the Clothesline Project at UVU. Twice a year tee shirts are hung up in a large room that have various statements or testimonials written on them by someone who was abused in a myriad of sad and terrible ways. The color of the tee shirt represents the type of abuse that was suffered by the author of the writing on the shirt. Yellow shirts represent individuals who are survivors of physical assault, pink, red or orange represent survivors of rape or sexual assault, blue or green represent survivors of incest or childhood sexual abuse, lavender or purple represent survivors of attacks suffered due to sexual orientation, black for those disabled as a result of an attach or assaulted because of a disability, grey or brown for survivors of emotional, spiritual or verbal abuse and white for individuals who died as a result of violence.

There we hundreds, maybe even more than a thousand, tee shirts handing in the room. All the shirts in the display were made by people in Utah County who visited the display, reflecting the reality that violence is a problem everywhere, even in Utah County

The main objective of this project is to raise awareness of these crimes that are going on in our very own community. The statements I read were written by people who have suffered abuse in all the ways described above, right here in our own little happy valley. We don't often see or even think of the insidious types of abuse that are being inflicted on innocent people right under our noses. We go about our lives, generally unaware of the neglected or abused wife or husband, child or son or daughter who lives near by.

Another objective of the Clothesline Project is to educate those who have been abused and to let them know of the resources they can access to help them. There is also the need to educate all people so that this abuse is stopped, so that it is brought out into the light of day and shown for the evil that it is. Writing the tee shirts also gives many of the abused a way to release their hurt, betrayal and anger and to move on and heal. We need to send a message that this type of behavior is wrong, immoral and so very damaging to those who are the victims. One of my good friends is the victim of severe childhood abuse that has scarred her mind and soul in unrepairable ways.

Do we need stronger laws? Do we need better enforcement of the laws we have? Do we need to speak out when we see or hear of abuse in our own circle of influence? Do we need to protect one another and say that this behavior is not OK and that we won't be quiet about it? We need to act to stop it, one person at a time, one family at a time, one neighborhood at a time, one state at a time and finally, one nation at a time.

Eat to Live

Think about that phrase...eat to live. Usually we live to eat. Switching things around can be the difference between such things as life and death, illness and wellness, mobility and immobility, happiness and sorrow, living life to the fullest and being home-bound. At least as far as EATING goes, it can turn your life around. You can feel better, lose weight and have more energy.
About a month ago, my friend Patsy and I went to a cooking class at Thanksgiving Point. It was all about how to eat healthy and how to cook with more fruits and veggies in mind. It was excellent. We got to sample some really good recipes and see how to make them. I'm now a BIG advocate of this book:

You can get it here. for $10.00. That's all it costs. I promise it will be the best $10.00 you've spent in awhile. It is full of sound medical research, good advice, tips on how to achieve success, several weekly meal plans and recipes and just good nutrition advice. I want to buy one for everyone I know. In addition to eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, it promotes eating more whole grains and legumes with less meat and less dairy. It makes sense to me.

We were also introduced to this book on how to feed kids better. It has some great suggestions, recipes, snack ideas and meal plans to help feed kids better. If you have a child who suffers from a lot of sicknesses, I think it is a very good idea to carefully consider their diet. You can get it here for $10.87.

I've also decided that when I reach 80 years old, I'm going to eat to die...that is, I'm going to eat whatever I want and never exercise again!

Surprise! Happy 30th to wowClaire!

We pulled off a great surprise as we traveled stealthily many hours to see our daughter Claire for her 30th birthday. She didn't know we were coming. We didn't know we were going until just a few days before. Call it an act of pure spontaneity. Rick hadn't see Claire & R and their little girl Skippy since early December. He hadn't seen Jord and Jake and their family since Christmas. He found out that J&J and girls would be visiting Claire and he suggested that we hop in the car and head down to celebrate with Claire AND see our little grand girls and their parents. It was a no brainier. Off we went. We drove for six hours, slept in a hotel and then drove another three hours arriving at the restaurant where they were all having breakfast on a Saturday morning. We stayed in town for 26 hours and then we drove the nine hours back home again. Crazy, but very fun! Grandpa Rick enjoyed playing with the girls and entertaining them with stories, songs, a few little gifts and activities.

Politics

I'll admit that I've very interested in them. Politics that is. Maybe my interest started in high school when I took US Government & Debate. Maybe it was visiting the Idaho State Capitol when I was in high school and watching the legislature in session and learning about how laws are made. Maybe it was marrying my husband who had a father who was very active in politics. Maybe it was going to Washington DC on a couple of occasions and feeling the great spirit of that place. Maybe it was in reading about our government and the leaders in our country in the newspaper online most every day and realizing the power that is in their hands to affect our lives for the better or for the worse. Maybe it was being involved in the planning commission in our town and seeing how city governments are managed and how things get done. Whatever the reason, I'm just interested.
I follow the national scene. I follow the state scene. I follow the city scene. Somehow I got elected to represent our voting precinct as chair at the next county and state conventions coming up in April. I had to stand up in front of 120 people or so and state my political views. Evidently those views are held by others in our precinct. I'm looking forward to participating in our state and country government process. I'm looking forward to adding a vote for a MODERATE Republican approach in Utah. I'm tired of the ultra-conservatives having their way all the time. I'm tired of various groups taking the GOP platform and turning in into something that is unrecognizable. I'm tired of hearing from the Eagle Forum and their ultra-conservative views and for having them hijack the party. I don't think the Tea Party movement has had a positive affect on our country. I think it's time for moderates to stand up and be heard.
Now I'm receiving three or four phone calls from pollsters a day to find out how I feel about different candidates and different political issues and problems facing our nation. I'm receiving lots of fliers and mailings from the candidates trying to sway my vote their direction. I'm going to various neighborhood meetings to meet the candidates and hear their views. If they're ultra- conservative or extreme constitutionalists, I'm not going that direction. My belief is that if we're going to get anything done in this country, then we absolutely HAVE to meet in the middle. Neither the liberals or the conservatives get the luxury of having it their way. If we are going to succeed, I believe that we have to talk. Compromise. Work together. Give some. It may be an overly simplistic political view, but nothing else seems to be working so maybe the politicians should give cooperation a try. One can hope!
There are really only two issues that I personally have strong feelings about. One is against abortion. Another is the holding on to traditional views of what constitutes a marriage.
Our country is too great to have it ripped in two by the uncompromising voices on either end of the spectrum . We've almost become our own worst enemies. We need to do what is in the best interest of the nation.
I'm with Mitt Romney.
More jobs.
Less debt.
Smaller government.
and...
No Obama.

Who are the Mormons?

For a link to Mormonism 101: FAQ go to this link.
Scroll down to the bottom of that link to see this graphic in a readable version. It's pretty interesting! I'm a proud member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint and it influences my life in positive ways every day.
