El Pinto

Rick likes to say that his old mission friend "owns" the town he lives in. Actually, it's kinda true. Everyone knows him. He has a major business in the city and he even did radio ads for a number of years. He has a distinct voice and a funny personality. Everyone knows and loves Keith. While we were visiting a few weeks ago we went to lunch with Keith and his darling wife Lorie. We went to a place we all know and love (since we go there about every time we visit) call El Pinto. It has great southwestern food and we always enjoy the ambiance and traditional cooking they do there. It was a beautiful day to eat on the patio and enjoy a beautiful spring day. This time we got an added perk. We got to tour their green chile/salsa making plant to see how it's all done. The owners gave us all a complementary lunch (thanks to the Keith connection) and last time Rick visited, he received two cases of red and green chile. We're BIG fans of El Pinto!

El Pinto Restaurant & Cantina, El Pinto’s Salsa and Green Chile Sauce are all a part of the El Pinto Family. The world famous and award-winning chile and family recipes are served at the famous El Pinto Restaurant. El Pinto was established in 1962 and has been featuring traditional recipes from our grandmother Josephina Chavez-Griggs ever since.

Freebies on a Friday

Last weekend we took a little weekend trip to visit Claire and R for Mother's Day. The good deals just started rolling in for some reason.

We got airline tickets for $39.00 one way

That evening we headed to watch the Isotopes play baseball.

Sat behind the plate on the 5th row. Tickets - FREE of course.
(Thanks again Keith.)

Parking when we pulled into the lot - FREE since our group made up a carpool.

Next stop - lunch at El Pinto (more on that later) with our long time friends Keith and Lorie and Claire and R. When our bill came, it was zeroed out. No charge. FREE baby free. Who said there wasn't such a thing as a free lunch? Well, there is (but you have to be there with really important people who are well known in the community and know the owners.) Score.
Our first stop was the balloon museum. Admission - FREE on that particular Friday.

Good times are always in store when Claire is on board. It was a fun weekend and it was great to spend time with Claire, R and baby Skippy.

Bizarre Foods - Mongolia

Tonight I was flipping through channels tonight trying to find something interesting to watch and I came across this amazing show about food in Mongolia on the Travel Channel. It's called Bizarre Foods, hosted by Andrew Zimmern. It will be rebroadcast next week. Here is the schedule. if you are interested. You've got to see it to believe it. It's very entertaining, informative and accurate as far as I can tell. I'm sure Andy will love watching this. It will probably make him miss Mongolia even more.

Mother's day angst

I'm one of those lucky women who loves Mother's Day. I appreciate the expressions of love and gratitude so freely given by my children and their spouses, my grandchildren, my husband and my own mother. The sweet notes, special treatment (breakfast and dinner made by R and Rick), little gifts and remembrances make me feel so loved. For that I am extremely grateful. Thank you all dear family for your love. I'm a fortunate mother. I love you all very much.
But, Mother's Day also causes many women to feel sad. I've been aware of some of these women in my group of family and friends over the years who dread Mother's day. Women who are single, divorced, single parents, or unable to bear children. My heart goes out to them always.
Sunday in church I was reminded of these women. The Bishop of the ward we were attending stood up and said something I thought was very meaningful. He said something along these lines: "Today is a day when we celebrate women, especially mothers. To those of you who are mothers, we honor your, we love you and we celebrate with you the great job you are doing to help and rear your children with love. Happy Mother's Day! We hope you feel the love and gratitude of your children and husband and that you have an enjoyable day.
There are also women in this room who approach Mother's day with a certain amount of dread. Those are the women who are unable to bear children, those who have never married, those who have children who have gone astray for a time and those who must parent their children by themselves. We may never fully know their heartache and longing to be mothers, or to be mothers with a partner by their side. We may never understand the complicated relationships between mothers and children when the relationships aren't ideal or the heartache of women who are estranged from their own mothers.
While we celebrate mothers today, we also acknowledge that there are many good women of this world who live in situations where celebrations are not being held.
To you all, we express our love and encouragement as we celebrate the good that women do in this world, regardless of their ability to bear children.
Instead of giving you all a little plant or a piece of chocolate, we've made a $100 donation in the name of this ward to the women's shelter in the area in the hopes that it will help some woman who is struggling to get on her feet again."
I admire the women I know who reach out to serve and help others, regardless of the number of children they have. While they may not have children of their own, or they may struggle with the children they do have, I admire their courage, their determination and their kindness. These are the true heroes and the women we should be celebrating on Women's Day.

She did it!

We're so proud of our daughter-in-law Courtney! She graduated last Thursday with a Master's degree in Speech Pathology. She worked very hard over the last two years to learn all the needed information to help people with speech and swallowing problems. She has interned in hospitals and schools and she is ready to put her formidable skills and knowledge to work helping people. I'm so proud of her hard work and determination to see a challenging major through to the end. Way to go Courtney, I love you! Plus, she got a new darling dress and shoes out of the deal. She looks very intelligent, professional and accomplished (not to mention striking and beautiful!) Oh, and you're not too bad either son. She and Dave hosted us at a fun BBQ afterwards at their home. She chose blue frosting for her cupcakes. Hum, wonder what that means?
